United States Embassy in Ankara has paid two dollars and 63 cents to writer Assoc. Prof. Haluk Gerger as ordered by court.
Despite having a valid visa, Gerger and his wife have been extradited while traveling to New York in 2002, without any formal explanation.
Following the incident, Gerger filed a complaint against the US government in Ankara, demanding pecuniary compensation for travel expenses and one dollar in damages.
The court rejected the appeal for compensation but ruled for damages amounting to one dollar, in 2004. Despite the court order, the US embassy didn't pay the damages and Gerger pressed forward with an order for enforcement.
As a result he received 2,63 dollars with interest.
