Twitter has announced that it has blocked access to certain content in Turkey "to remain available" in the country.

The action was taken in response to legal requests, the social media platform stated on its Global Government Affairs account, without revealing what content was blocked.

"We have informed the account holders of this action in line with our policy. This content will remain available in the rest of the world," it said.

The announcement was made just a day before the country's presidential and parliamentary elections.

In the past, the government has been known to restrict access to social media platforms after events such as bomb attacks or natural disasters, prompting opposition politicians and freedom of expression groups to urge people to acquire VPN connections.

In response to legal process and to ensure Twitter remains available to the people of Turkey, we have taken action to restrict access to some content in Turkey today.
