No Water to Drink but Floods in Ankara!
Turkeys capital has had to deal with water cuts since the beginning of August. As if that were not enough, pipes have also been bursting when water is resupplied.
Since Ankara's dams are nearly depleted, the city's municipal council initiated regular two-day water cuts of the city's water supplies at the beginning of August.
However, one pipe was not able to stand the water pressure when water was supplied again, and an area of Ankara was flooded for fifty minutes with water up to ten metres deep. Many cars were surrounded by water.
While the Ankara Water and Canalisation Admistration and fire fighters were busy with the evacuation of the area, many citizens called on Mayor Melih Gökcek to resign.
While Gökcek has blamed the lack of water on unfortunate weather conditions, others have criticised the lack of management.
This has been the second pipe burst. On Saturday night, eleven cars were damaged irreparably because of another burst. (AÖ/AG)
