Movement of Goods Across The Green Line
European Union issues specific rules for the movement of goods across the Green Line dividing the Cyprus island between Turkish north and Greek south. The decision is expected to improve northern economy under international embargo since 1974.
Specific rules for the movement of goods across the Green Line will enter into force on 23 August. The rules were adopted by the European Commission in July and are now published in the Official Journal of the European Union ).
They provide for trade across the Green Line in wholly obtained goods but also in trade for manufactured goods originating in the northern part of Cyprus.
The goods need to comply with EU standards, as regards plant health, food safety and other safety requirements. Arrangements are made for phytosanitary inspection and reporting.
The Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce is authorised to issue the relevant documents. (EK)
