Gul: EU Showed Great Sympathy & Determination
If the Turkish side says Yes and the Greek side says No then the by-laws that will be applied to the Turkish side should be revised while the Greek Cypriots enter the European Union (EU). The Turkish part should not be punished, Gul told the press.
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul held a series of bilateral meetings with his English, French, German and Irish counterparts.
He said the European Union showed "great sympathy and determination" for Turkey's stance in the Cyprus issue.
Gul answered reporters' questions upon his return from Ireland.
He said: "It has been underlined that if the Turkish side says 'Yes' and the Greek side says 'No' then the by-laws that will be applied to the Turkish side should be revised while the Greek Cypriots enter the European Union (EU). The Turkish part should not be punished. The regulations imposed after such negativity should not be understood as if they penalize the Turkish side. I said this and got the other ministers to support this." (YE)
