Gen. Basbug Expects Concrete Steps by US
Second Chief of Staff General Ilker Basbug said that We expect a concrete step from U.S. to liquidate PKK from Northern Iraq.
At a press conference after his contacts in Washington, Basbug said that he had voiced to American officials, the worries of Turkey in issues related to Iraq.
Recalling that talks with U.S. were under way and there was understanding over dissolving PKK, he said "The only issue that we could not solve, is our inability to say that U.S. has taken concrete measures for this purpose. Now we await concrete steps. We think that U.S. should display her political resolve, with concrete and convincing measures."
Gen Basbug said that U.S. Joint Chief of Staff Gen. Myers agreed in principle with him and a lower-ranking strategic meeting was under way at the Pentagon, however, "We asked for steps taken in an agreeable span of time." (NM)
