Detained in Beyazıt, German Girl to Be Deported

A 15-year old teenager girl from Germany will be deported after being detained by the police during anti-ISIS protests in Istanbul University. 

Previously, police released other demonstrators - 4 minors and 19 adults - on the day of their detention on October 13. 

The aforementioned German girl was previously released as well to make a statement the following day. After releasing her statement, she was transferred to a shelter in Istanbul’s Kemerburgaz district prior to her deportation. 

“It is not right for the administration to discriminate people according to citizenship,” advocate Şükriye Erden told bianet. “My client must not be kept in a shelter.” 

Erden said that S.A., a German citizen with Turkish descendant, arrived in Turkey on October 12 for family visit and was detained by the police as she was walking with a friend around Beyazıt district. 

“While her friend was released, S.A. was ordered to testify to the prosecutor the next day. The deportation decision was taken even though she would Turkey in 8 hours. The state must act with a sense of fairness,” she added. 

ECHR found Turkey guilty

Previously, Turkish authorities also sent Elisa Marianne Couvert, a French student who was interning at Turkey’s Human Rights Association (İHD) in Istanbul, to a shelter prior to her deportation in 2013. 

The European Court of Human Rights admitted her complaint, finding Turkey guilty for “putting her in a shelter for deportation despite a verdict and carrying a passport”. (BK/BM)
