Justice and Development Party AKP called on Parliament for an extraordinary session on September 14, to tackle the Penal Law motion. The party also called on for the replacement of 5-6 provisions in the original motion, including the ones on adultery.
AKP tries to amend the provision present in the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) which does not define adultery as a crime. However opposition Republican People's Party CHP threatened AKP, saying that if the TCK motion, which was already passed by the parliamentary committees, is modified, it will deadlock the parliamentary debate on TCK. CHP claims that, the amendments, which AKP tries to make on the motion, will turn TCK into a "Law of Moslem Law, Sheriat."
To iron out the differences between the two parties, AKP's Deputy Group Chairman Salih Kapusuz will visit CHP's Chairman Deniz Baykal today. (YE)
